4th July 2006

Today was the 4th of July but it wasn't enough to stop the juggernaut that the WSOP has now become. 622 players started todays $5k No-Limit Hold'em (3 day event) tournament .Only 60 missed the firework display that I witnessed as I left the Rio and headed west on Flamingo. My apt complex (residential apartment complex) was dark but noisy, the air smokey, very similar to November 5th in Britain, without the treacle toffee.

Of the survivors there are names you will recognise. Conor Tate (Bury nr. Manchester), rumoured to have schooled Michael Owen online, finished 12th in last years main event is there with $51k.

Marco Traniello celebrated Italy's victory with a solid day's play to end with $56k. His wife Jennifer Harman was eliminated in the last level of the day.

Rene Angelil wife Celine Dion didn't play but her husband finished with $54.3k.

Holland's Marcel Luske and Rob Hollink both made the cut as did Isabelle Mercier. Isabelle spent her dinner break signing autographs in the pokerstars hospitality suite alongside SNL star Norm McDonald. Stars have also signed Barry Greenstein.

Nick Gibson from London finished with $48.1k.

Chip leader is Erik Carjais, like Isabelle, from Montreal.

Phil Hellmuth continued in superb form finishing with $126.3k.

The winner will take home just over $818.5k
.
