15th July 2006

I entered the room shortly after 2pm to hear "Harry needs a jack to stay alive..." Maybe there was another Harry at the final table. After all Harry was second in chips. No such luck. Harry had been put all in by the Aussie Guttman. Silver lining. I had backed Guttman so I was already in line at the online window.

Well Guttman only finished third, the win going to Willie Chen who has a poker book out soon. This win might raise his profile if the exclusives decide to write about him.

With players split between the Omaha 8 or better (Hi Lo to you and me) and Limit Holdem the fields seemed reasonably playable.

Europe has a fine chance of glory tomorrow in the $2k NLHE final. Julian Gardner, Manchester's finest, a real WSOP specialist, is the chip leader with 628k. John Shipley (Solihull), has 166k and Frenchman Robert Cohen (Paris) has 419k. Veterans Bob Bright (Vegas) with 365k and Bill Duarte (Boston Billy) with 102k are the only other winning players in the line up. I am trying to recover my Guttman losses on Julian although I do not expect better than 5/2.

Like Harry, Jon Kalmar (Chorley, UK), he went from 4th to finish 88th, had a nightmare day .

No British survivors in the LHE. Peter Costa makes it into day 2 of the Omaha8. Whenever I talk to Peter he is always playing the best poker of his life so hopefully I can report on Peter progressing to the final table tomorrow.
