What Does Your Favourite Casino Game Say About Your Personality?

The UK Gambling Commission published a report in March that found 45% of adults in Britain participate in gambling. That’s a lot of people! As gambling has grown in popularity, the idea that some personalities gravitate towards particular casino games has also increased. This is just one of the reasons why casinos offer a wide variety of games instead of creating a niche. That way they ensure every player can find the perfect game for them. In fact, gambling author and math genius Henry Tamburin went as far as to create a list of common personality traits and matched them to their perfect casino game counterparts.

We’ve taken a look at this list and some other studies to decipher which casino games are best enjoyed by which kind of people, so you can find the game that best suits you. You might be surprised.

Poker – Mathematical Risk Takers
If we’re going to be discuss games and gambling personalities then it only makes sense to begin with one of the most popular games in history.

According to a 2015 study of gambling behavior in England and Scotland, there has been a significant increase in the number of British adults playing poker over the past few years both offline and online.

Due to the nature of modern day poker, successful players can often be described as mathematical but intuitive risk takers. This means that they are not afraid to occasionally go all-in, if they’re confident in their abilities. At the same time, it has to be said that poker players are also regarded as thoughtful and rational. Mathematical analysis plays an important part in poker, especially calculating odds, so poker aficionados tend to have a thing for numbers. They take pride in making good decisions even when those decisions may seem inconsequential to others.

Video Poker – Analytical Introverts
Whilst video poker’s table counterpart may rely on gut feelings triggered by other players, this computer-based game relies solely on skill and strategy. Video poker players are often regarded as analytical, up for a challenge and eager to win. This is because they will spend most of their time trying to figure out ways to improve their gameplay before continuing to grind through rounds.

These players may also be more inclined towards introversion, which is perhaps one of the main reasons they decided to pick this form of poker in the first place. Table poker can easily become a stressful endeavour, but in video poker there is no intimidating dealer, no judgmental players and no rush. This may be why the format is so popular. For example, casinos with a lot of local clientele in Nevada often have to devote around 50% of their slot space to video poker machines!

Those who enjoy video poker may also enjoy slot games or, if they’re looking to branch out into more social games, mini-baccarat.

Blackjack – Extravagant Thinkers
In a similar style to video poker players, those who gravitate towards a good game of blackjack are also likely to be strategic thinkers. The chances of winning a game of blackjack are almost entirely dependent upon the individual’s skill, which means any player worth their salt has put plenty of effort into developing a strategy.

However, unlike video poker players, it’s thought that blackjack competitors are somewhat extravagant and perhaps even ostentatious. After all, playing blackjack requires unwavering confidence and nothing gets a crowd excited or an individual noticed like a fantastic, daring game.

Craps – Intrepid Extroverts
Those who play blackjack are similar to their craps counterparts, as both players tend to be flashy and flamboyant. That said, craps players are by far the most extroverted casino players of all, as well as the most fearless.

Throughout a game of craps, players can shout to their hearts content, making sure everybody knows that they are here to win! Each individual has to be assertive, bold and willing to let the dealer know when to ‘press’ or ‘take down’ their bets as they roll the dice. Even rolling the dice is a brave move when considering the odds of actually rolling the right numbers. The odds of rolling snake eyes alone is just 1 in 36, whilst rolling a 3 or 11 is 1 in 18 and a 4 or 10 is 1 in 12. The best odds by far are for rolling a 7, which is 1 in 6 so if you’re a crafty craps player that might be what you want to aim for.

Roulette – Shy Thrill Seeker
Like blackjack and craps, roulette is often featured in movies and TV shows as the ultimate crowd pleaser. This image implies that roulette calls for a certain type of bravado that would make some people feel uneasy and that can cause many reserved gamblers to cringe at the thought of being the centre of attention. However, it turns out that the exact opposite is true.

Unlike many other casino games, roulette relies entirely on chance. There’s about a 48.65% chance of winning on either a red or black, or on even or odd numbers. These are by far the best odds, with the lowest being the 2.7% chance you have of winning on one number. Due to this pivotal factor, roulette is easy to learn and there is no such thing as making a wrong move. At the same time, roulette features a series of different bet options and bet combinations that allow for great variety in odds, allowing a player to really show their worth.

The excitement of wagering real cash on a game of chance remains, making it the best game around for shy gamblers who seek to thrill.

Though certain personality traits may be clearer in different casino game crowds, you may very well be the exception. You could be the shy strategist who loves to play craps! Then again, you may have been struggling to find that perfect game for a while now and have been wondering which game is best for you. Next time you visit the casino, whether it is online or offline, take a moment to really think about your personality traits and the games you are best matched with. Give it a go and let us know how it goes!
