 German Grand Prix Review

   German
History : Hockenheim, Spa, Monza; three out of the next four Grands Prix are the quickest and longest in the calendar. And the first of these may be the last Grand Prix on the Hockenheimring in its current state: it's the second longest circuit currently to Spa, and it's the second fastest, to Monza.

Forty-eight German, six more European(including this year) and two Luxembourg Grands Prix means that Germany has been the scene of more Grands Prix than there have been years in the World Championship. This year it hosts its 49th race and the 25th at Hockenheim. Last year, Hockenheim moved ahead of Nurburgring as German Grand Prix locations - although Nurburgring has those European and Luxembourg Grands Prix to its credit.

Nurburgring hosted early World Championship Grands Prix until the end of the fifties when a single race was run on the autobahns of the Avus, just outside Berlin but then the Grand Prix returned to the Nurburgring again. Hockenheim had its first Grand Prix in 1970 and then after Niki Lauda's accident at the Nurburgring - one of only two German Grand Prix race stoppages, incidentally - the race returned to the circuit by the Rhine in 1977, briefly returning to the 'new' Nurburgring for the 1985 race. All subsequent races have been at Hockenheim.
Last Year's Result
1 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 1 hr 25:34.42
2 Mika Hakkinen McLaren + 07.45
3 David Coulthard McLaren + 21.17
4 Jenson Button Williams + 22.69
5 Mika Salo Sauber + 27.11
6 de la Rosa Arrows + 29.08
1 Lap = 4.239 miles (6.823 km)

Form : Ferrari have won the German Grand Prix a massive 16 times, to Williams's seven, and McLaren's six.Ferrari have been in the points every year since 1988; McLaren have been in the points since 1995. Hakkinen has had two poles and a win, and he's on a roll at the moment after his British Grand Prix win. Coulthard has had a first, second and two thirds. Barrichello won from 18th on the grid last year, but otherwise his record is poor.

Prediction :
Tough call but power is an issue. BMW drivers, Williams will be wanting to put it all down on the track. But do they have the tyres now? McLaren seem to have the package back together and they may have the all round best race car. This is a really close one and there should be some fireworks on the track. Williams will probably split their men in terms of race plan as only a win will get the sponsorship money. McLaren must back Coulthard.

This race looks to not favour Ferrari so its a McLaren by shade at this point. Many things will change for qualifying.

After qualifying its clearly Williams as we thought but they seem far enough ahead to beat any tyre set problems and McLarens inevitable improvement in race set-up. Michael Schumacher will struggle. Ralf looks to have the best chance.

Weather : Prediction of hot weather for Sunday +30 Celcius. Track temp 48.

Practice
The WilliamsF1 star finished at the top of the listings, with team mate Juan-Pablo Montoya hot on his heels. The Grove team have been tipped for a successful weekend at Hockenheim, and the current hot temperatures appear to be suiting their Michelin tyres.

McLaren have a had a difficult day. Hakkinen experienced traction control problems during first practice which kept him in the garage, and when he eventually did make it out on to the track he spun off and was forced to return back to the pits. Although Coulthard had a trouble-free first session, the Scot spun off early in second practice.

Michael Schumacher was quickest during this morning’s first session, but could not match his brother’s pace as the morning progressed, eventually having to settle for third, ahead of Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello pushed hard at the circuit which gave him his only F1 victory to date, but the Brazilian could not improve on 6th fastest.

Saturday Qualifying
Juan Pablo Montoya will start from pole position at Hockenheim for the first time in his Formula One career. The WilliamsF1 star was on top form this afternoon, as he and team mate Ralf Schumacher dominated the qualifying hour, and the Colombian was clearly delighted with his first F1 pole.

It was Ralf who set the pace early on in the afternoon, setting a blistering lap time on his first run out of the pits, but it was eventually his rookie team mate who took the glory, leaving the German to start alongside on the front row in front of his home crowd tomorrow.

Michael Schumacher has never taken pole at his home circuit, and never looked like he had much of a chance today. Despite the cheering of his passionate fans, Schumacher was unable to qualify higher than fourth, and starts just behind Mika Hakkinen.

Result
Not a great race but sure signs that its a three horse race from now on. In fact its a sure thing that BMW power will out strip Ferrari and Mercedes power through the rest of the season because they are all fast circuits.

Ralf takes his third win this year with a calculating performance of protecting his engine. The only serious challenger was Barrichello in 2nd, a full 50 secs behind. Engine failure will be a big feature of the next few races so backing longer odds drivers will be at its best. Micheal Schu will not be winning his 51st this season.

Footnote : In World Championship terms, Germany has recently moved into fourth in the all-time rankings of wins. Wolfgang von Trips was their lone winner for many years(two wins in 1961) until Jochen Mass squeezed in with his half-points victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1975. Since then, however, Michael Schumacher, then Frentzen and now Ralf have taken the tally up to 58 wins and Schumacher, of course, has won three World Championships. There have been 39 German Grand Prix drivers plus another ten who failed to qualify - fifth in the alltime rankings. Some of these have been virtual unknowns: early German Grands Prix included a class for Formula Two cars and two of them failed to complete a single lap - although that lap was 22kms! However, others were pre-war Grand Prix heroes such as Hermann Lange and Hans Stuck Snr.
