View : The European Grand Prix has roamed about all over the place. The first one ever was at Monza in 1923 and the European title roamed from there to Lyon, then Spa, San Sebastian, back to Monza and then Spa in 1930 before falling redundant.

This year its at at the Nurburgring in Germany which has been the location for five European Grands Prix and even two Luxembourg GPs. Of the 6 races run here in the recent period which starts at 1995, M.Schumacher and Villeneuve have 2 each with Herbert and Hakkinen taking the others. Villeneuve won twice for Williams.

Last Year's Result
1 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 1 hr 42:00.31
2 Mika Hakkinen McLaren + 13.82
3 David Coulthard McLaren + 1 laps
4 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari + 1 laps
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Benetton + 1 laps
6 Pedro Martinez de la Rosa Arrows + 1 laps
1 Lap = 2.831 miles (4.556 km)
This is a fast circuit, not the fastest and speeds will reach 185mph on the start straight. Ferrari are best suited to this although Williams maturing car will contest the race if they manage the same gel of tyre and down-force that they got in Canada. McLaren are struggling. Good value seems still to be had on Ralf, although best price for the race pre-qual is 11/2 and for pole 8-1. Ferrari clear favourite to have pole as their tyres will allow it.

Form :
Mika had started from third in the last three Nurburgring races, had one retirement and won the Luxembourg at Nurburgring in 1998. Coulthard, however, has had four thirds and a second, plus two poles - probably the best bet apart from Michael who has had three wins and two seconds in European/Luxembourg races.

Barrichello's record isn't bad with four finishes in the points, the same as Frentzen who started from pole in 1999. Trulli had that second, sandwiched by the Stewarts in 1999. Irvine has had two fourths, Ralf just one finish, Alesi two seconds and Villeneuve the long shot with two wins.

Williams broke up a great run in the points last year by not finishing, but scored points between 1985 to 1999 including three wins, while McLaren have finished the last four years in the points, including two wins.

Prediction :
Williams failure to take pole is just the signal of how good they will be in the race. Their tyre choice means inabillity to get fast quickly but will have durable race speed. The only thing in Ralf's victory path is not Michael, who will be satisfied with 2nd, but Montoya. Don't be too surprised to see one of the first 3 leaving the track on the first lap.

It will not sit well with Montoya's ego to be outdriven. I don't think he'll becoming 3rd. Ed.
Weather : Prediction of clear skies for Sunday

Friday Practice
McLaren dominated for much of both sessions, with Coulthard finishing ahead of Hakkinen at the end of the first hour. Heinz-Harald Frentzen had a difficult morning, despite being cleared to take part in practice. The Jordan driver left the track in exactly the same place three times during the first hour, and eventually retired. WilliamsF1 started the day off slowly, but picked up their pace in the later session.

Qualifying
1 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 1:14.960
2 Ralf Schumacher Williams + 0.266
3 Juan Pablo Montoya Roldan Williams + 0.530
4 Barrichello Ferrari + 0.662
5 Coulthard McLaren + 0.757
6 Hakkinen McLaren + 0.816
Saturday Qualifying
The Schumacher brothers battled it out for the second qualifying session in row, sadly for us at GGG Michael finally took the top spot from Ralf half way through the hour. We had Ralf at 8-1! with Sporting.

McLaren struggled with grip, and will be disappointed to start the race from fifth and sixth, with Coulthard ahead of his team mate. Rubens Barrichello had a difficult afternoon, and eventually switched to the spare Ferrari. The Brazilian never looked to be in a position to match his team mate’s pace. After a series of 'offs' during practice, Jacques Villeneuve will be relieved to have enjoyed an un-eventful qualifying session. The French/Canadian lines up 11th on the grid, with Olivier Panis 13th.

Drivers left it late to use up their laps, and the usual last minute dash saw 18 cars on track for the closing minutes of the qualifying session. A spin from David Coulthard brought out the yellow flags however, and there were no late improvements.

Result
Michael Schumacher claimed his 49th career victory at the Nurburgring.

The race followed the pattern of Canada, the Michelin's developing as the heat went on. Pitting at the same time as Micheal was a big mistake for Ralf and Williams. Ross Brawn noticed that Williams had only one set of scrub tyres and would be vulnerable in the second stint. Getting ahead of Michael before then was essential and that might explain his eagerness to get out of the pit lane and try some daring overtaking, or was he just annoyed?

Ralf incured a stop/go penalty for crossing the pit lane exit lines after this pit stop and was never going to be in the hunt for top spot. We lost our 11/2 bet on him but had salvaged a slight plus with 6/4 Michael.

Irvine's 7th spot was only just behind Mika, still the Jaguar is slower than McLaren but it shows the superior quality of Michelin. At Magny Cours, Michelin have better tyres already tested!! There will be no testing before then because of the "no testing in the a GP week" rule. Get your bets on now. Ralf looks set to take pole, but its just possible Michael will not be on the front row. Look for match or group bets where Michelin can be backed.
