Friday Practice - Qualifying - Result |
View : This year's Canadian Grand Prix is the halfway
point of the 2001 Grand Prix season. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a pretty
circuit, built on an island, close to the city centre.
The Villeneuves
are Canada's main F1 challengers and have their place in Grand Prix history, no
other Canadian has scored a World Championship point. Gilles Villeneuve tackled
67 Grands Prix between 1977 and 1982, won six of them and scored 107 points.
Son Jacques has surpassed his father's total of races - this will be his 90th -
scoring 204 points and winning eleven races.

This will be the 33rd
Canadian Grand Prix held, the 23rd on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which is
the third venue for the race. The first Canadian Grand Prix took place on the
Mosport Park circuit near Toronto in Ontario in 1967, alternating with the Mont
Tremblant track near Montreal for the first four years of its
existence.
It then remained at Mosport until 1977 when the track was
considered too dangerous, and with interest growing in the career of Canada's
own Gilles Villeneuve, the race was moved to a hastily prepared track on the
Ile de Notre Dame, site of Expo '67 and the rowing basin used in the '68
Olympics, on the St Lawrence River. Gilles Villeneuve won that first race on a
track that would be named after him following his death in 1982.
That
victory of Gilles Villeneuve's was one of eight that have been won by Ferrari -
including Jean Alesi's only Grand Prix win of course - but McLaren have also
won eight times in Canada. Williams have won six times. Ferrari have had three
one-twos in '70, '85 and '00; Williams have had three: '80, '89 and '96 while
McLaren have had two, in '68 and '88. Williams have occupied the front row
three times, and McLaren four, but Ferrari have never managed it.
Info : Most
successful driver in Canada has been Michael Schumacher who has won four times.
Benetton report that it is the race which requires the least downforce
so far this season. In fact they are predicting 205 mph/330 kph on the straight
this year. The surface is low grip, used once a year and therefore very dusty
and dirty. You can spend your time chasing a set-up on the Friday because the
grip level varies so much. But due to the number of chicanes, there are several
factors which come into play. Tyres can be very soft here but they will still
need to be consistent, an interesting and challenging combination. It's
important to have good power out of the chicanes but that also means fuel
consumption and therefore weight is high. It's important to have a strong
transmission due to the acceleration under load out of the chicanes, and it's
imperative to have good brakes going into them. S

Friday
Practice It was business as usual on the first day of practice in
Canada, as the McLaren and Ferrari drivers took it in turns to top the
listings. Although they did finish ahead of the pack, both McLaren drivers
experienced some near misses in the second session. Hakkinen narrowly avoided
hitting a barrier early on in the day, whilst Coulthard left the track on more
than one occasion but managed to recover. Eddie Irvine was an impressive 3rd
fastest, the Ulsterman keeping himself high in the listings for the entire
second session.

Saturday Qualifying Jacques Villeneuve will be
slightly disappointed to start his home event from ninth, but the
French/Canadian will no doubt be relieved not to have repeated the accidents
experienced during practice yesterday. Jacques hit the news before qualifying
after allegedly grabbing Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya by the throat in
the drivers' briefing ahead of the session. The pair continued their battling
on the track as they fought for much of the hour, but Villeneuve eventually
came out one place ahead of the Colombian.

Result Jacques Villeneuve's poor form on home soil
and the track named after his father continued. But for the rest of us a new
star rises to challenge Ferrari/Schumacher dominance. Williams, already a fast
car, got it all right this time by sacrificing speed for down-force and control
through the corners. Ralf helped by out-driving his big brother by .25 sec per
lap and Montoya in the same car by 1sec per lap. For those of us with the money
down it was William's poor reliabillity that had us on edge to the
end.
The smart gamblers noticed the Michelin tyre choice would pay-off
on this track if coupled with car set-up. There are several more tracks like
this one, fast and heavy braking into corners plus chicanes that need this type
of set-up. Williams looks set for more points, especially at the home circuit.
McLaren needs new ideas to stay in contention. |
