Odds are shortening
that Blackpool will win a Las Vegas-style super-casino in what would be a
remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the down-at-heel seaside
resort.
Government insiders say plans are emerging that will result in
proposals for two super-casinos being put before a committee of MPs within
weeks. The idea is to let both Manchester and Blackpool have super-casinos to
placate MPs and Lords who blocked Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell's original
plans.
The move will rely on Conservative support which could
materialise now that the Tories have seized control of Blackpool council from
Labour.
Last week Manchester City
Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein was said to have held secret
discussions with Chancellor Gordon Brown and Tory leader David Cameron to seek
assurances over Manchester's selection.
Blackpool lost the right to
host a super-casino to Manchester following a government-appointed casino
advisory panel recommendation earlier this year. The surprise decision sparked
a parliamentary revolt.
