Harrah’s Do Alright

Harrah’s Entertainment have announced Milwaukee’s Best Light Beer is to become the Presenting Sponsor and Official Beer of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) through 2008.

It’s claimed the deal is the largest of its kind ever between a gaming entity and a corporate sponsor. As part of the agreement, Milwaukee’s Best Light will be integrated into several facets of the WSOP and will promote the WSOP on a year-round basis.

As yet, there is no word from Harrah’s as to how much of this “largest deal of its kind” will be added to the World Series tournament prize-pools.

...As Do ESPN

American broadcaster ESPN has signed a deal to cover the World Series of Poker – now called “The WSOP presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light” – until 2010.

The sports channel has also announced that, for the first time in history, ESPN will offer a live pay-per-view telecast of final-table play at the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold’Em World Championship.

Poker enthusiasts will be able to see all the action from the final table of the Main Event as it unfolds with ‘The World Series of Poker Live!’ .

The pay-per-view program, available on home television screens or live video screen at ESPN.com, is scheduled to start at 1pm local time on Thursday, August 10, and continue until the new world champion is crowned.

The pay-per-view transmission, with a retail price of $24.95, will be offered in addition to ESPN’s regularly television presentation of the World Series of Poker and the Circuit championships.

Ladbrokes Poker A Grand Film

X-Men 3 writer Zak Penn has penned a forthcoming comedy poker movie to be called “Grand”.

The “Grand’s” cast includes Woody Harrelson, Ray Liotta, Ray Romano, Jason Alexander, Cheryl Hines and German helmer Werner Herzog, with the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas being the venue for action shots.

“A lot of actors were intrigued by the script, because they are naturally competitive,” says Penn. “And the fact that poker has become this crazy phenomenon isn’t unhelpful to us. The entire cast has learned No Limit Hold’em in preparation of shooting.”

“Grand” is among a handful of poker-based projects in the pipeline, including Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming “Lucky You” directed by Curtis Hanson and starring Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall.

Ladbrokes Poker Reason To Party

The four founders of PartyGaming, plus one of the group’s chief technicians, cashed in some more of their chips last week, coming away from the table with just under £232m.

Traders had been expecting PartyGaming’s director Anurag Dikshit and the marketing boss Vikrant Bhargava to sell shares after they quit the board of the business last month. But it emerged that their desire to sell-out was shared by the company’s original founders, Ruth Parasol and her husband Russ DeLeon.

The four major shareholders sold 5% of the business and were joined in the sell-off by Nitin Jain, a technician who joined the company during the dotcom boom shortly after Mr Dikshit.

In total, the five dumped 200m shares at 116p each - the same price at which the stock was floated a year ago.

All four founders have already been turned into multimillionaires by the flotation of the business, set up in 1997.

Ms Parasol, a former porn baroness, and Mr DeLeon each sold £218m worth of shares when the company was floated. Mr Dikshit sold £420m worth of stock at the same time for example.

However, the four founders still have 65.7% of the business and have agreed not to sell any more shares until after September 5, when PartyGaming announces its half-year results.
