Well, its about time. Its about
time somebody devoted a column purely to online poker gossip, and as Padraig
Parkinson likes to say, Im the only one sick enough to do it. Because in
order to really keep up with whats going on online, playing just
doesnt cut it. You have to be a watcher. You have to be a sickly sick
individual with welts on your legs, plastered to your chair with eleven browser
windows, a pot of coffee, and an understanding wife. Your eyes must be as big
as moonballs and you have to speak four Scandinavian languages, which is not
nearly so difficult as trying to translate what some Canadians call English.
No, being a sweater is a thankless job, but I have to admit that I am sick
enough to do it. What can I say? I just like watching poker.
Big
happenings on Sunday, April 12, as the PokerStars tournament winners playoff
takes place. 18 players, one World Series of Poker seat up for grabs. Mere
mortal men will not be taking part in this event, which features the out and
out best tournament poker players on the Internet. Team Carborundum will be
there to lend European support to that old stalwart Slimmouse, who is one of
the most ferocious tigers ever to tap a keyboard. Another Brit in the field is
the demagogue Milos, the second player in tournament poker history to demand
more than 1st place money when brokering a deal. Everyone remembers that the
first player to do this was Mad Marty Wilson, who pulled the move out of
principal when finding himself shortstacked against four world champions plus
Phil Hellmuth. No joking, this is likely the most premium tournament ever to
take place on the Internet, so anyone who still has something to learn could do
worse than to stick a browser window on the rail. |

Speaking of Pokerstars,
their weekly head-up with the world champion event has become a bit of a
laugh-in. The tournament leader every week plays head-up limit Omaha Hi-Low
(read no nut for numb nuts) for $1000 with Pokerstars champion in residence,
Tom McEvoy. I may have missed one of these for leap year, but barring a blue
moon, McEvoy seems at a distinct advantage in these events, and hes been
duly pounded every week Ive watched. World Champion Robert Varkonyi
provided a brief victorious respite as McEvoys stand in one week, and
this past Sunday mathematician David Sklansky thrashed a fellow named Lenny.
Whos the king? Right now the undisputed online champ cant
even go to Las Vegas. 19-year old Erik Sagstrom is the best from a group of
Swedish meatballs who are usually in residence on the hi-limit tables in
Ladbrokes. The kid has gamble, but also a whole lot of game to back it up.
Ladbrokes currently sees the bulk of the big Internet bucks changing hands at
the 50-100 table and higher, but the hi-limit games at World Sports Exchange
and Ultimate Bet are nothing to sniff at neither.
Best new value for
the low limit players as far as I can tell is currently at The Hendon Mob
cardroom, an offshoot of Bugsys club. They are regularly adding $50 to $3
tournaments with no entry fee and 40 player fields. You do the math. In
addition, the monthly giveaways from their Bugsys league are quite
substantial, $5000 per month for what is currently a very select group of
people.
Funniest thing Ive heard online this week was from the
most disagreeable player on the Internet, a foulmouthed rounder from Thornhill
who complains louder than an old man sending back soup at a diner. I know
I complain a lot, he said, but in person Im one of the nicest
guys youll ever meet. Im thinking, no.
Watch out all
you online champs. Wherever youre gambling it up, talking out your
blowhole, Ill be there. How will you know its me? Ill be the
guy named Observer. |
