Bet Exchanges Explained

flutter.com
This has had money spent on it Don't get into a flap over your flutterand it looks and feels smooth. The help and info buttons supply you with enough information to be happy with and the overall operation of the menus is good - you generally end up where you wanted to go.

NEW Their basic rules are 5% cut of the winnings and the maximum odds allowed has been raised from 10-1 to anything. Its nice and simple. Our serious gripe is the little phrase above the 'returns' column for each bet (the amount the winner gets). It says "you could win". Well, no you couldn't. You might end up with that amount of money if you win the bet but a good deal of the money was likey yours to begin with.

A plus point for this site's British users, and that seems who they are aiming at, is the fact that they use the standard U.K. odds format, i.e. 2/1, 9/4. (so why do they write it like 2:1, 9:4? we don't know)

With such a nice name it should do well but this site doesn't show signs of attracting heavy hitters, its mostly £10 bets. If you are looking for fun on a wide range of events for the price of a round of drinks then this will do.    ALWAYS read the agreement and rules before betting.

ThreeOne GO betfair.com
REPORT 16/02/2001
There are some nice ideas on this site, the layout is an attempt at using many small screens at once to show a lot of information. There are little menus on the left that give you all the available markets.Did you have fun at the Fair?

As with some of the other sites, Betfair uses the decimal continental style of representing odds. For some reason they call them 'decimal odds'? We may never know why. Another feature unique to them is they charge commission (5%) on net winnings. Five percent on an evens bet works out as 2.5% on the total, just like the other sites. (A 2-1 winner means 3.3% commission and a 1-2 winner means 1.67% i.e. its the same overall)

You have to know what back and lay mean but once you've got them sorted out in your head its reasonably easy to understand the betting screen. This site takes a lot of action, with no limit on the amount of money you can bet, up to the limit of your deposit.

There is a nice touch with information buttons next to each bet. Click on that and a clearer explanation of what is on offer comes straight up. We like it.

DOWNSIDE
Why don't the scroll bars on the left windows actually scroll. You can miss a whole load of info if you forget they work abnormaly. You need to be in full screen mode to understand the display properly, in the standard 800x600 IE type browser window things are looking messy. Many of the pop up windows appear off the side of the screen. Why? The touted Spread Betting? Where is it, we couldn't find it.

Strike me if it ain't another way of doing the same thingThis is a new approach from Coral Eurobet. We like variety but is this it?

Its certainly a nice idea to make all markets a win/lose proposition because its simple to understand. (i.e. a draw in a football match is a win for the away team) This however does rather rule out more complex sports. They have a graphical approach to displaying the history of wagers as if it were a stock market ticker which could in theory show movements in a market.

The truth is that the market is not going to move much and therefore any notion of "playing the market" won't work. Also if you offer £7 you can only collect £10 in total, so your 25p tax will come from the £3 you pick up. Thus your tax rate is more than 8%.

Good try but try harder.

You and me one-to-oneAnother standard entrance into the Bet Exchange market place. Creating your own bet is flexible but there is little explanation so you had better know what you are doing.

This site will have to find a niche somewhere if it is to get a name and currently they claim to have big football action. 10% tax on winnings, ouch.

Must try harder.
